A welcome respite break was enjoyed at Hotel Los Narejos, Los Alcazares by Torrevieja Stroke Support from 23rd to 25th October. 22 members welcomed the opportunity to be looked after and having time to stroll along the picturesque Mar Menor in warm sunshine with several dramatic "fly past" demonstrations by the Spanish Air Force to entertain. Stroke sufferers and carers alike felt the benefit of the short holiday and their thanks go to the helpers who came along to give much needed aid and support, and who made the break so carefree.
TSS next respite break will be a day coach outing to Benidorm on 30th November.
Stroke Support meets weekly at The Annex, Municipal Buildings, c/Paganini s/n, Urb. La Siesta, Torrevieja from 2.45 to 5pm. For further information:- 96 671 8964. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. www.torreviejastrokesupport.com.

"We´re for Life after Stroke" – the Stroke Association in the UK is re-launching itself on 1st May with a month of stroke awareness across the UK and in the media to raise the profile of Stroke and it´s challenges. Here in Torrevieja the Stroke Support Group adhere to this aspiration. Tea shirts with the new logo are to be offered to members. They have already undertaken "Steps for Stroke", sponsored walk when over 2,000 Euros was raised on Easter Monday. Leaflets were distributed in English and Spanish with information about the necessity for speedy action if stroke is suspected as well as the therapeutic activities offered by TSSG. The Support Group thanks all who sponsored "Steps for Stroke", which it is hoped will become a yearly event. Other "awareness" events are planned.
Torrevieja Stroke Support Group is soon to re-establish it´s website with improved information. In addition to more volunteers and the dedicated committee they now have a Spanish Occupational Therapist with the obvious benefits of knowledge of the Spanish "system", language and professional expertise. Other therapists include a Speech and Language therapist, Physiotherapist and Personal Trainer, and Art therapist etc., all demonstrating and encouraging "Life after Stroke".

The Torrevieja Stroke Support Group (TSSG) wants to thank the Scottish Country Dancing Club for their continued support following a recent donation of €250.
TSSG is available to all those who have suffered a stroke and their carers, providing a safe and therapeutic environment at their Friday Group meetings in the Annex of the Age Concern building at La Siesta.
President, Louie Killeen, says:
TSSG is most grateful to receive donations, the only source of income. Donations such as that received from the Scottish Country Dancing Club helps us to continue therapeutic activities and outings for all our members. Our other valuable resource is the support given by volunteers – who are at the heart of what we do.
The Group closes for a short summer recess following their meeting on 13 July reopening on Friday 7 September when planning will begin in earnest for their awareness/fun day on 22 September.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, or would like further information about the support available through TSSG, please contact Louie Killeen on 966 718 964.
For further information about the Scottish Country Dancing Club readers can contact John Lawson on 96 678 35 08.
Dancing sessions have now ended for the summer. They resume in October at a new venue, "La Rosales" (situated on the Lemon Tree Road, near Guardamar.)

The last time we reported on the MAD (Menopausal and Dangerous) Red Hat Ladies at the Stroke Support Group it was for the official launch of their 2012 calendar the proceeds from which were to be donated to the Torrevieja Stroke Support Group. The calendar is in the style of that other famous calendar produced by the ladies of the Women's Institute in a Yorkshire village and featured in the film 'Calendar Girls'. Very appropriately in this case, the group's trademark red hats feature prominently in their calendar. The costs of printing of the calendar were met by sponsorship and advertising from local businesses and photographer Graham Strachan took the pictures donating his time and expertise free of charge. The Post Room in Benijofar designed the calendar for the Ladies and organised the printing. A total of 400 calendars were printed and proved enormously popular.
The leader of each group of the Red Hat Ladies is known as the Queen Mother and Heather is Queen Mum of the MAD Red Hat Ladies. She presented a grand total of 1,827 euros to Margaret Tozer the Secretary of the Stroke Support Group and said the MAD Red Hat Ladies got 'a tremendous amount of pleasure in putting something back into society' through such donations.
The Red Hat Ladies have groups in over 25 countries and were originally inspired by the lines of a poem from founder Sue Ellen Cooper:
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat that doesn't go and doesn't suit me
It is a group dedicated to 'Friendship and Fun after Fifty'.
The new secretary of the Torrevieja Stroke Support Group, Margaret Tozer, has had many years' experience of working with charitable organisations and she and the Stroke Support group's president Louie Killeen told us of developments to help on the administration side with separate email addresses for the group, internet access and telephone available in their offices, all designed to 'make it a bit more professional'.
There are two events that are coming up for the Torrevieja Stroke Support Group. The first is a Day Seminar on Monday 26th March to be conducted by Liz Roberts who is the Training Officer of the Stroke Association UK in the North West region. This seminar is designed for therapists, volunteers and committee members of the Torrevieja Stroke Support Group. Details of the venue and timings are still being finalised.
The second event is 'Steps for Stroke', a sponsored walk taking place on Easter Monday 9th April and organised by Paul and Pat Owen. The walk will start at 11.00 am from the Paseo Maritimo near to the musicians statues go on just past Playa Cura to the Monumento Culturas Mediterraneas and back, a distance of approximately five kilometres. There is an entrance fee of 5 euros and sponsorship forms are available for those who would like to collect some money to donate to the Torrevieja Stroke Support Group. Fancy dress and Easter Bonnets are in order and sponsorship forms can be obtained from Paul and Pat Owen who are voluntary personal trainers and physiotherapists to the stroke support Group by telephoning 966 848 494 or 625 847 170.
